Weather characteristics of the 2012 growing season in Croatia with aspect of winter wheat growing
Wheat is the second ranked crop in Croatia, but its production is characterized by yield variations per year, mostly due to unfavorable weather conditions. Aim of this study was to evaluate the precipitation amounts and mean air temperatures in the different parts of Croatia during 2011/2012 growing season regarding theirs suitability for winter wheat growing. Seedling emergence was slow and non-uniform as a result of insufficiently water supply before sowing and further low precipitation in November. Drought period in March caused absence of tillering and slow vegetative growth. However, the rest of growing period was adequate regarding water and temperature regime, and estimated wheat yield in Croatia for 2012 is 5.3 t ha-1 what makes it’s the second most in the last 15-year period.
