On Displacement of Agency: The Mind Handmade

The hands belong to a participatory being that engages in worldly affairs—natural, social, and cultural—without having always to consciously deliberate. An agent with rich manual experience does not only react to what mind experiences as “reality, ” but rather guesses and anticipates what might be the most likely situation in the world and prepares the entire organ- ism for how to deal with it. Thanks to bodily know-how, and specifically to manual intelligence, a cognitive organism is tuned to cope with the world without the aegis of the so-called higher cognitive processes.
