Students with disability in higher education – needs, responses and challenges

Raising accesability of higher education for academic community means more diversity in student population (students from etnic minorities, students with disability, chronically ill students, students with children, older students, financially disadvantaged students). In this presentation a focus will be on educational needs of students with disability and responses to these needs at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. The ultimate purpose of inclusive approach is to achieve a better feeling of personal security, greater social and political equality, greater inclusion in the community life and, generally, the promotion of social justice. The presence of students with disability in the classroom is not a proof of their inclusion in higher education system and is not an indicator of their full participation. Although, legal framework is clearly defined, the law itself does not lead to inclusion, it just enables decision making and serves as a long term goal to the issue of discrimination (Vanhala, 2006). It enables also deconstructing disability as the ground of discrimination and focusing on the rights based model of disability (instead of paternalistic and charity approach).
