NMR study of heavy-fermion system α-YbAlB4

α-YbAlB4, a heavy fermion compound with Fermi-liquid ground state at zero magnetic field, shows signs of a metamagnetic transition [1] occurring close to H = 3 T. This intriguing fluctuating-valence system is an isomorph of β-YbAlB4 where quantum criticality [2] and low-temperature superconductivity [3] manifest at zero magnetic field. Through NMR on 27Al and 11B nuclei we inspect the nature of the transition in α-YbAlB4, and determine the underlying H-T phase diagram. Magnetic field dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at low temperatures shows a maximum occurring in the vicinity of 2 T and 3.5 T, with a power-law temperature divergence indicating a quantum critical behaviour. We will discuss the observed magnetic field dependence of NMR data in the view of current theoretical models that account for quantum criticality in heavy fermion systems. [1] E.T.C. O’Farrell, K.
