Knowledge and absorptive capability: Are they relevant for achieving above average performance?
Absorptive capability, as part of company’s dynamic capabilities that is responsible for to recognizing the valuable information, assimilating and applying it, is analyzed and empirically tested in his article. It is operationalized as multidimensional construct that consists of knowledge acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation. The theoretical model that incorporates absorptive capabilities, competition and company’s performance is presented. Results of empirical analysis, conducted on 265 large and medium-sized Croatian companies from all industries, suggest that all four dimensions of absorptive capability are related to company's performance. In other words, companies with more developed absorptive capabilities achieve higher performance levels. Also, companies that operate in industries with large number of competitors have less developed absorptive capabilities and achieve lower performance levels.
