Causal model in second generation expert system

In addition to reasoning based on heuristic rules, second generation expert systems have also the ability of reasoning based on the system model. The paper describes a causal model of an engineering system given in the graph form. BOTTOM-UP and TOP-DOWN algorithm for model based problem solution and deep reasoning is given. Next, a procedure of optimal examination is described. In the end, the learning component, i. e. the generation of new production rules, created as a result of causal model examination is dealt with. The computer program in Pascal code for the causal model with priorities is given in the Appendix.
