Effects of liming on cadmium concentrations in the field crops
Field experiment with increased rates of waste of sugar factory (39% CaO) in amounts 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 t/ha was conducted in autumn 2000.Leaf-Cd in maize was lower in 2006 than in 2010 (means 0.076 and 0.117 mg Cd/kg, respectively). As affected by liming leaf-Cd drastically decreased (2-year means: 0.165 and 0.08 mg Cd/kg, for the control and limed treatments, respectively). Grain-Cd was considerably lower (0.02 mg Cd/kg). Mean wheat grain-Cd in 2007 was 0.081 mg Cd/kg and non- significant differences between liming and control treatments were found. However, barley grain-Cd in 2004 on the unlimed treatment was 0.028, while under liming conditions it was 0.02 mg Cd/kg. Liming reduced tobacco leaf-Cd in 2005 (3.6 and 2.0 mg Cd/kg, respectively), but in 2008 tobacco leaf-Cd was independent on liming.
