Vacuum workshop for primary and secondary schools teachers

When a member of a vacuum society introduces him- or herself to the public usually she or he is faced with complete astonishment by the collocutor: What is your “vacuum society” about? Even some vacuum society members start to believe that vacuum is nowadays just a tool and that word "vacuum" should be omitted from the society name pointing rather towards applications. A vacuum is a technique and a tool, by which we can achieve many things, but also it is a physical entity and it was, and still can be studied and explored as well. To understand the nature it is also necessary to understand the vacuum. The level at which “vacuum” is present in primary and secondary schools curricula in Croatia is very low and should be improved, both from technological and physical point of view. The Croatian Vacuum Society therefore started the activity to build and perform “Vacuum workshops” in order to promote vacuum techniques and science about vacuum among school teachers, and help them to perform demo experiments in classrooms. We shall show the present status of the workshop which contains a number of standard and some non-standard exercises executed by means of a low cost materials and assets. One of the project goals is to develop low cost vacuum demonstration kit which could be donated to the schools. The project is open for new collaborators and all discussions, suggestions and criticisms are welcomed.
