Dareijev veliki natpis u *Bagastani

The article opens with a historical introduction to the Achaemenid inscriptions in Old Persian and to the sequence of kings of kings, their respective historical role in the international context, and their cultural and religious attitudes. This is followed by a linguistic introduction presenting the main phonetic laws explaining the evolution of Iranian and Old Persian phonology from the Indo-European phonological system, and making some general remarks on the structure of Old Persian. The integral translation itself follows the lines of the original and is intended to be as faithful as possible, but also aims at imparting the literary impression of the original. It departs from other translations in a number of passages, and hopefully provides a more original and more precise meaning. In the first four columns, Darius describes how he came to power and how he won nineteen battles in the first year of his reign (522-521 BC) against the rebels in the Empire, and how he took nine kings who opposed him prisoner. In the fifth column, he describes two additional military victories from the second and third year of his reign. The *Bagastāna (Behistūn, Bīstūn) Inscription is the first, greatest, and possibly oldest inscription in Old Persian — it is, in fact, trilingual (OP, Elamic and Akkadian) — and it holds immense historical value. The translation is accompanied by explanatory notes. The article has a supplement in which I attempted to place the many synchronic military operations in different lands described in the inscription into their chronological order, and to explain the somewhat opaque composition of the narrative as the result of an intentional simultaneous application of two ordering principles: of the order of subjugated lands used in the catalogue of lands or provinces (dahyu) in DB I, 14-17 on one hand, and, on the other, of the chronological order in cases where repeated insurrections occurred in particular lands, which were likely preceded by insurrections in other lands, leading the latter to be cited before the repeated occurrence of the former.
