Measuring social progress by sustainable development indicators: an overview of the indicators and their applicability
This paper presents an overview of the progress in the development of indicators of sustainable development (SDI) and scientific research in sustainable development (SD) in Croatia in the context global challenges. The analysis of the indicators is based on the national set of sustainable indicators developed in recent time by different developers with focus on the EU level in comparison with other regions in the world. Key challenges include (1) comparability and aggregation variability of SDI in relation to the quality of data determined by the sustainable development policies ; (2) impacts and reflections of compiled SDI on different kinds of user needs ; (3) contribution of R&D to sustainability ; and (4) Social responsibility and sustainability. The overview of scientific research summarises the data provided by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and available other studies. The paper concludes with a consideration of a critical role of scientific research in SD and some key lessons learned about the implementation of SDI which could be highly contextual and dependent on the needs of the end-users
