New quinolones in the treatment of urogenital infections. 2nd Croatian Congress on Infectious Diseases with International Participation - Abstract book
A whole range of new quinolones have been introduced into clinical practice in the last several aears. Apart from ciprofloxacin, among the well known are trovafloxacin, gatifloxacin, gemifloxacin, clinafloxacin, moxyfloxacin. Basic characteristics of these quinolones is their activity against gram-negative bacteria, gram-positive bacteria and activity against Chlamydia an mycoplasma which cause genital infections. Taking into consideration their good pharmacokinetic features -penetration into genital tissues - we can assume that these quinolones will be even more effective in the treatment of some sexually transmitted diseases (nonspecific urethritis cervicitis) as well as in the treatment of urinary tract infections. For now, only a small number of clinical studies confirm this thesis but there is a good assumption that soon there will be more such studies and that quinolones will be administered in the above mentioned indications.
