Treatment of Legionnaires’ disease: Macrolides or fluoroquinolones?
AQ total of 320 patients with confirmed LD werw hospitalized during the last 12 years. Out of them, 80 were treated with antibiotics before hospitalization. 182 patients were treated in the hospital initially with appropriate antibiotics while 48 patients received inappropriate antibiotics. Azithromycin monotherapy was administered in 43, moxifloxacin in 29 and doxycycline in 14 patients. Time of apirexia was significantly longer in the azithromycin monotherapy group (2.8 days) compared to the moxifloxacin group (2.0 days). The results suggest that moxifloxacin may have a superior clinical response compared to azithromycin with regardes to de fefervescence.
