In terms of the number of inscriptions, China and Croatia are among the most successful state parties of the UNESCO’s program on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The author compares how the discourse and practice of heritage are processed in these two countries by looking into the types of heritage elements and communities involved, the participation of communities in the nomination processes and more broadly their authority in defining their heritage, the proposed and implemented safeguarding measures, the work of state institutions responsible for implementation of the program, and the consequences of enlisting in broader society, in particular regarding the expediency of heritage in tourism. Although the author’s insights are very unbalanced, profound regarding Croatia and very superficial regarding China, limited in the latter case to UNESCO’s publications, Internet research and scanty literature dealing with the topic, it is nevertheless clear that – at least on discursive level and regarding main state-supported actions – there are more differences than similarities in how China and Croatia process the idea of intangible heritage and its safeguarding. Looking positively, this can be interpreted as testifying of UNESCO’s ability to accommodate diverse notions of heritage, thus promoting cultural diversity, the authority of communities (even if translated from local or grassroots level to national ones), the processual nature of heritage and intercultural dialogue, i.e., the main ideas of the program in general
