Personalized Healthcare
The age of personalised medicine has arrived. Information obtained from human genome project, HapMap project, various “omics” started to provide dividends. The use of these data for understanding individual specificities of each patient promises a huge improvement in prevention of disease, diagnostics and treatment, prediction of patient’s response to the therapy and consequently in enhancement of healthcare and life quality overall. We become aware that individual characteristics, as a consequence of interplay of genes and environment, are essential components for understanding predisposition to the disease, its course and duration, prognosis of outcome but also in choosing the right therapy with maximal efficacy and minimal toxicity. Genetic characteristics of particular group of patients, in addition to the knowledge on molecular basis of diseases, enable us designing new smart-drugs, creating novel therapeutic approaches and providing us a platform for individualisation of therapy. This is why, pharmacogenomics becomes of a great interest not only for pharmaceutical industry but also for clinicians, pharmacologists, and clinical pharmacists. Yet, the age of personalized medicine brought numerous challenges in legislation and ethics, (pharmaco)economics as well as in public information and education. In my lecture I will point out current status in pharmacogenomics, prospects for future and conceivable obstacles as well as the impact on the society.
