Croatian autochthonous cattle breeds in organic production
In Croatia autochthonous cattle breeds lost in importance at the expense of more productive breeds, therefore they make only 0.65% of all cattle breeds. Thus, Busha and Istrian cattle breeds are classified as highly vulnerable and Slavonian Syrmian Podolian cattle as critically endangered according to FAO. Last two decades Croatia works on preventing their extinction, trying to preserve genotypic and phenotypic heritage for the future and to revitalize breeding of autochthonous breeds. Planned breeding program, clear definition and implementation of breeding objectives accompanied by promotion and guaranteed market, ensure placement and competitiveness of indigenous breeds. Products of autochthonous breeds achieve 20% higher price than the standard one, thus providing self-sufficiency and sustainability. This involves mainly gastronomic delights, branded products (eg “Bakin” salami from Istrian cattle). Also, products produced in organic system (extensive farming, no use of hormones, optimal microclimate conditions for animals, etc.), get an added value, which is a highly valued and appreciated. Such products ultimately achieve a higher selling price, have regular customers and become more competitive. In organic production, particularly one that includes indigenous breeds, the support of local communities, counties and scientific institutions is of great importance. In order to establish a serious and longterm growth of the sector of organic farming it is important to encourage and connect all participants in the chain of organic production by creating partnerships (producer-processor, local government-school, etc.), to promote and maintain consumer awareness of organic products and its importance in maintaining biodiversity, to establish synergies with the tourism sector for better placement of products, and encourage scientific and professional institutions to confirm the importance and advantage of organic products from autochthonous breeds with scientific work.
