Urban open space – Typology suitable for planning purposes and open space strategy

Concepts such as ''urban landscape'', ''open space'', '' urban green space'', ''green area'', „greenery“ etc. have a multitude of meanings and uses. In theories of branches that are associated with urban planning as well as in physical planning documentation they are mainly linked to the presence of nature, that is, to urban green space and have a very wide and unspecified meaning. As a result, their categorisation in the course of planning and designing processes, which serves to differentiate them according to their function and shaping, is an individual one. Due to the absence of an official classification of green urban surfaces, there is a lack of understanding as to the use of these concepts, which consequently leads to non-uniformity of the typology of green urban spaces and the role that individual types play within urban space. As a result of that we are most often faced with imprecise, too general or groundlessly exclusive physical planning regulations, which are for the most part inapplicable as guidelines for the shaping of individual green urban spaces in the context of a well- planned urban green system development. Hence, the main focus in this paper will be placed on the re-evaluation of terminology, which is used in the context of urban green spaces and which appears in physical planning documentation. The re-evaluation will be carried out by means of concrete example analysis containing the noted dilemmas. Finally, the paper will include a discussion that should lead to the development of a more systematic approach in the creation of green urban surface function within planning and designing processes.
