KISELE KOMPONENTE U PM10 FRAKCIJI LEBDEĆIH ČESTICA I UKUPNA BETA AKTIVNOST ZRAKA

This investigation focuses on the measurements of major acidic anions chlorides, nitrates, and sulphates in PM10 particle fraction and total beta activity in the air – UBA in the city of Zagreb, Croatia. Sampling was carried out continuously over a period March – December 2011. Daily samples of PM10 were collected on quartz filters from 720 m3 of ambient air. Mass concentrations of PM10 fraction were determined by gravimetry. Content of water soluble acidic anions chlorides, nitrates and sulphates in the filter sample were measured using ion chromatography. Total beta activities of the filter samples were measured using beta counter for low-level activities (GM multi-counter system RISØ) five days after sampling in order to avoid the influence of short half-life radionuclide. Results of the continuous monitoring of total beta activity in the filter samples of PM10 particle fraction during the observed period showed significant agreement with PM10 mass concentrations. The results of total beta activity in the filter samples of PM10 particle fraction showed significant agreement with mass concentrations of acidic components in PM10 particle fraction too, best for sulphates, followed by nitrates, and than by chlorides. The annual average mass concentrations of the investigated anions followed the order chlorides < nitrates < sulphates and their mass concentrations accounted for about 17.5 % of total PM10 mass. Significant correlations were obtained between PM10 and investigated anions. Next concern shall bee given to the chemical and radiochemical analysis of other species in PM10 particle fraction to the possible relationship between total beta activity and PM10 particle fraction in the air.
