Numerical simulations of exhaust valve cooling

Exhaust valves in large diesel engines when operated on heavy fuel are exposed to intensive high temperature corrosion attack due to presence of the vanadium in fuel. To avoid this problem, efficient valve cooling must be applied. Cooling of the exhaust valve by coolant in the valve shaft bore is not applicable for these valves. The paper presents the results of the analysis for the exhaust valve cooling through intensively cooled valve seats. Results of numerical simulations for the valve heat-up process at engine start and in steady state operation are presented and compared to published experimental data. Details of the mathematical model using finite volume approach are presented too.
