Neprijatelji ili samo loši susjedi? Jugoslavija I balkanske zemlje 1970-ih i 1980-ih

The article deals with the Balkan policy of Tito's Yugoslavia in the late 1970' and 1980'. Focus is on two neighboring countries with which Yugoslav relations were permanently strained: Bulgaria and Albania. Based on published sources from the American archives (FRUS) and documents from two private collections of Yugoslav Federal Secretaries for Foreign Relations (Josip Vrhovec, minister from 1978-1982 and Budimir Lončar, 1988-1992), notes from the last chief of staff of Marshall Tito Berislav Badurina, private collections of Croatian emigre politician Mate Meštrović as well as oral interviews with several actors, author showed to which extent non-alignment was major factor in overall Yugoslav foreign policy, clearly visible in shaping relations with Sofia and Tirana. It also puts different light on the influence of Yugoslav republics on the Federal foreign policy. Manipulations and different interpretations of history, old and recent one, were one of the most problematic phenomenon in relations between Sofia, Tirana, Athens and Belgrade. While Yugoslavia was rather lenient vis-a-vis obnoctious, overly sensitive and sometimes ridiculous moves of Albanian leadership, willing to tolerate vitriolic propaganda of Enver Hoxha regime, it was overly sensitive towards Bulgarian politicians. In the light of Tito's illness and delicate age, possible negative developments in Yugoslavia were of relevance for the improvement of relations between Greece and Turkey. In a separate chapter, celebration of 1300 anniversary of Bulgarian state in 1981 was described. Bulgarian state had invited Mate Meštrović, No.3 in Croatian émigré circles to visit Sofia as one of the participants, causing dramatic slow down in relations between two countries.
