Seasonal variation of oxic-anoxic conditions in the small, seawater lake (Rogoznica Lake, East Adriatic Coast) related to the global climate changes

Long term investigation of the Rogoznica Lake (since 1994 seasonal variations of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, dissolved organic carbon, surface-active substances, reduced sulfur species, phytoplankton and zoo-plankton have been investigated) showed that main physical- chemical characteristic of the Lake is occurrence of well-defined seasonal stratification of water column as well as occurrence of anoxic conditions in deeper water layers (>10 m). During spring and summer surface water is well-oxygenated with intensive primaryproduction processes and bottom anoxic layer is characterized by high concentrations of sulfur compounds, nutrients and dissolved organic matter. The depth of anoxic water layer changessea sonally and it is greatly influenced by meteorological conditions, i.e. temperature and rainfall. Vertical mixing occurs during winter when cold, oxygen-rich water from the surface sinks downwards. As a result of mixing, bottom water enriched with nutrients is coming to the surface supporting new phytoplankton and oxygen productions. Results of recent investigations (since 2001 up to now) have showed significant change of organic matter properties what is a consequence of changes in phytoplankton abundance and composition. Also, recent investigations have showed significant change in hydrographic conditions, i.e. temperature and salinity what we believe is closely related with global climate changes
