Complex Structure and Dynamics of Hydrogen Bonded Liquid Mixtures of Simple Molecules

Structure and dynamics of water and aqueous solutions still present a challenge to the research in physical chemistry. With the aim to identify the sources of the difficulties we performed a parallel study of aqueous solutions (methanol and ethanol) with a mixture of methanol/acetone. It is observed that different regimes of structural organization can be identified as a function of the molar fraction of the components. This is characterized through the Kirkwood-Buff integrals, pre-picks in the structure factors and cluster size analysis. Additionally we performed the dynamic analysis of these mixtures by calculating the time variation of individual and collective auto-correlation functions. This is compared with the results of OKE spectroscopy. There is an indication of some long characteristic times which could be identified with the existence of large scale structures.
