Biblical Narratives and their Pictorial Solutions in the Pauline Monastery Churches in Remete and Lepoglava

Biblical narratives representing the Temple of Solomon (Solomon and Bath Sheba), the Child Jesus in the Temple and the Cleansing of the Temple, painted on the presbyteries walls of the Pauline monastery churches in Remete and Lepoglava, expose the basic idea of the temple within the temple, the idea of the body of Christ as the spiritual temple and the idea of the body of Virgin Mary as the symbolic shrine of Jesus and the God’s Word. Both churches are dedicated to Virgin Mary, whose iconic representations, the Virgin of Remete and the Black Madonna of Częstochowa are positioned in prominent central positions of the high altars. The ceiling paintings in both presbyteries refer to glorification of Virgin as the substantial part of the Eucharist, generally symbolized by the monstrance holding the communion host, the “body of Jesus”, and celebration of Virgin as the Ark of the “New and Eternal Covenant” as well. The visual representation of the narratives display two different concepts of illusionist depiction of Temple – the Cleansing of the Temple in Lepoglava church is based on the contrasts of entropic and chaotic figurative compositions and sober monumental classic architecture in the background, whilst the one in Remete represents the open interior of Solomon’s temple crowned by trompe l'oeil Baroque galleries with fragments of architectural perspectives in their backgrounds.
