High-resolution real-time ultrasonography of the thyroid gland
This article provides a review of diagnostic possibilities of gray-scale ultrasound in the morphologic diagnosis of thyroid diseases, sensitivity and specificity of the method as well as its potential for determination of malignancy. There are many reasons for the use of high-frequency gray-scale ultrasound as an initial examination technique in the evaluation of thyroid disease. According to the study, ultrasound has inadequate specificity to distinguish thyroid diseases, although its sensitivity is quite high for some thyroid changes. The main drawback of the technique is that some groups of lesions, primarily thyroid nodules, cannot be identified as benign or malignant. Therefore, other techniques should be used for precise evaluation.
