Security challenges in the Western Balkans: building „soft“ security after conflict

The chapter analyses security challenges in the Western Balkans, approaching the countries as small states being a weaker part in a broader power relationship. In a global or a continental European context all the countries of the Western Balkans could be considered as small states. The comparative analysis of seven Western Balkans countries is given based on selected basic indicators. The most important security challenges faced by the countries of the region are analysed, including soft security threats, state weaknesses, corruption and organised crime, economic and social threats. Particular focus is given to the role of international actors in the region as well as to regional and national responses to security threats.
