Loss of teeth and remodelling of the TMJ fossa
Variation in biomechanical forces, changes with loss of teeth, can result in remodelling (size change) of the osseous parts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of loss of teeth to the size of the mandibular fossa and articular eminence. Measurements of skulls were performed by direct craniometric method using instruments. All measured values were slightly greater in edentulous skulls but without statistical significance. The only significant difference was in the subgroup of males for the articular eminence which was longer in the edentulous skulls (p < 0.005). Asymmetry between the left and right joint is mostly the case but the difference was not significant ; but symmetry was greater in edentulous skulls. Values for all measured parameters were greater in males.
