IDENTIFICATION OF HERITAGE BUILDINGS IN CROATIA MOST THREATENED BY EARTHQUAKES
Identification of buildings which are most prone to damage or destruction during strong earthquakes is the first step towards their protection by retrofitting and reinforcement. A course often followed today usually starts with measurement of dynamical parameters of buildings (free periods of oscillation and associated damping) along with determination of amplification spectra of the foundation soil. These measurements provide information on the potential of the soil-structure resonance during strong earthquakes which occurs when modal periods of the building and the soil are similar. In case of resonance, the building oscillations induced by an earthquake may get extreme, and may lead to collapse of the building.
