The Impact of New Technologies on City Acupuncture Methodology and Interventions
Every city consists of two basic structures, the physical and the social one. The quality of urban life and identity is directly dependent on the ways and intensities these two structures are intertwined and connected. The main premise of the City Acupuncture methodology is a belief that one can efficiently improve the city life quality through small and precise interventions made in interdisciplinary discourse with participation of citizens and local government. So far, the methodology is applied through workshops with groups of young professionals from different disciplines who are invited to react creatively to the physical and social space. They propose interventions designed in coordination with local neighbourhood capacities. The objective of each intervention is to apply and fit in the chosen neighbourhood location and thus to achieve the desired effect on social dynamics and experience of space. It is necessary to keep the local community involved during the entire process, from a public survey about potential locations to an evaluation of the proposed interventions. For that purpose, the intervention photographs are added online, onto the interactive map. Some interventions designed on City acupuncture workshops use new technologies to achieve the desired goals. One of them, named Localized narratives, is a good example of improve social identity. Neighbourhood narratives from interviews made with Trešnjevka district residents, whose memories reach as far as 1930’s, are extracted and localized on the map making fragments of vivid personal stories as well as voices of forgotten neighbourhood memory layers come to life. An interactive map provides access to the original audio record narration related to the specified spatial location. Although City acupuncture methodology and interventions are mainly analogue, the part in which they use new technologies is very important for the efficiency of the entire process.
