Cu-Fe-Ni-P contact materials produced by continuous casting or powder metallurgy route
Mechanic electrical contacts are frequently used in various applications, because they are cheap, and capable to withstand overvoltage and overcurrent surges. Usually, copper is used as contact material, because of its good electrical and thermal conductivity, ease of manufacture and good corrosion resistance. On the other hand, copper has relatively low mechanical properties (hardness, tensile strength) and poor wear resistance, which limits its application. We have focused on a high strength, high electrical conductivity Cu-Fe-Ni-P copper alloy for such applications. An effort was devoted to the production of continuous cast rods and sintered cylindrical specimens. The continuous casting was performed directly from the melting crucible into a graphite mould with a diameter of 16 mm on a vertical continuous casting apparatus. Sintered cylindrical specimens were manufactured by cold pressing of water atomized powder and sintered in a tube furnace under argon protective atmosphere. The paper also presents morphology, microstructure, electrical properties and hardness of the alloys.
