Ultrasound diagnostics of Cervical Lymphadenitis in Children
Gray scale sonography is widely used in the evaluation of the number, size, shape, site, borders, matting, adjacent soft-tissue edema, and internal architectures of cervical lymph nodes in children. The purpose of this review is to reiterate and illustrate the sonographic features of childhood inflammatory lymphadenopaties. Those conditions most commonly represent a transient response to a benign local or generalizied infection, but occasionally they might herald the presence of a more serious disorders. Acute unilateral cervical lymphadenitis is caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal infection in 40-80 % of cases. The most common causes of subacute or chronic lymphadenitis are cat scratch disease, mycobacterial infection, and toxoplasmosis. Ultrasound imaging is extremly helpful in diagnostics, differentiation and following the treatment of childhood inflammatory lymphadenopaties. Failure of regression after 3-5 weeks might be an indication for an ultrasound- guided fine needle biopsy.
