Bilirubin affects the V-79 cell membrane lateral domain structure which is coupled with the molecular permeability
Electron paramagnetic resonance has been used to identify the lateral domains in the V-79 fibroblast cell membranes. The spin probes used reveal the coexistance of threee domain types differing in their molecular ordering. The action of bilirubin changes lateral domain structure, primarily in their membrane population proportions of domains. In this work we are presenting how the rate of the membraen permeability for the hydrofobic molecules was diminished by the action of bilirubin. Essentially we tried to prove the hypothesis that the particular domains which are distinguished by different premeabilities and their changed relative cell membrane domain populations, show up in a diminished overall membrane permeability caused by action of bilirubin. The membrane perameability and the domain structure was measured in viable cells. Permeability was evaluated from the reduction rate of the spin probe in the reaction with the endogenous cellular reducing agents. In fact, we found that besides the domain proportions, also the particular domain permeabilities have been changed by the action of bilirubin.
