Laboratory and field research into biomechanics of alpine skiing
Experimental research in sports biomechanics in Zagreb dates to the beginning of 1980-ies. In course of these years one has developed and standardised, among other, a certain laboratory diagnostic methodology suited primarily to sports disciplines such as sport gymnastics and track-and-field (see 1, for instance). It was based on surface EMG and ground reaction force variables, and only recently, due to inclusion of portable recording devices (EMG), was one able to move from laboratory outdoors. Biomechanics of alpine skiing was considered at first only theoretically, from the preventive-traumatic and sports medicine aspects ; and safety binding construction in particular was thoroughly analysed (2). One has begun to research experimentally into alpine skiing movement structures recently, in artificial laboratory conditions, focusing to neuro-muscular system of lower extremities (3). The most recent aspect of our research is actually taking place in conjunction with colleagues from Ljubljana, further broadening our experimental methodology with kinematic and kinetic terrain measurements. This paper is aimed to illustrate some of our specific goals, methodology and research results, pointing to their possible practical use, both in the top skiing as well as in the ski teaching realm.
