Nonwoven composite for sound absorption
The research in the area of development of lightweight, skin-friendly, non-corrosive, environmentally safe, self-decontaminating ; durable and less bulky protective materials which reduce physiological burden and provide improved protection and safety resulted in three layered fabric composite. The nonwoven carbon fabric layer is sandwiched between two skin friendly nonwoven rayon fabric layers and manufactured at Texas Tech University using the H1 technology needle loom Fehrer®AG. The adsorption capabilities and its antimicrobial and thermal properties, as well as flame retardancy were previously thoroughly researched. Therefore, in this paper the acoustic properties of this nonwoven composite have been measured. The values of sound absorption coefficient determined for separate layer of nonwoven carbon fabric or nonwoven rayon fabric are low, but for nonwoven composite the coefficient values are increasing even to 0.45 at 6000 Hz. The reason for that is higher thickness of the nonwoven composite, and the air trapped between the fabric layers in the composite. Considerable increase in sound absorption is observed if nonwoven composite is connected with carbon layer or better, if it is doubled. The best result is observed for doubled nonwoven composite with carbon layer in between. The sound absorption coefficient is on the level of 0.9-1.0 in the frequency range of 4000-6400 Hz.
