Diocletian’s villa in Late Antique and Early Medieval Historiography: A Reconsideration
The author presents an analysis of the terminology used to denote Diocletian's palace at Spalatum (Split) in Late Antique and Early Medieval textual sources: Eutropius, Jerome, Epitome de Caesaribus, Prosper Tiro, Chronica Gallica, Comes Marcellinus and Constantine Porphyrogenitus. He analyzes the value of historic material in Jerome’s additions to Eusebius’ Chronici canones. Furthermore, he deals with the value of Jerome’s expression ‘palatium villae’, and the latter making or not a part of the real Late Antique terminology.
