Differential diagnosis of chest pain: causative role of esophageal disorders and diagnostic value of esophageal testing.
Recurring chest pain is an important clinical problem and major clinical dilemma for the posibility of cardiac disease. Many patients in whome cardiac orgin of the pain has been excluded continue to have chest pain, anxiety and compromised lifestyles. Non-cardiac chest pain is quite common.Fifty percent of patients with normal coronary angiogram have esophageal abnormalities. Several diagnostic procedures are used in the evaluation of potential esophageal disorders as a cause of non-cardiac chest pain including esophageal manometry and pH-monitoring, provocative tests and sophisticated ambulatory monitoring devices.
