Head Injuries during the Homeland War in Croatia: Case Reports

According to many literature sources head injuries are one of the most common and most serious injuries that occur during wartime. These injuries can range from simple brain concussions to more complex and penetrating blast or weapon injuries. From a radiological point of view this is very important to asses these cases as soon as possible because moderate and severe brain injuries can be readily diagnosed with brain imaging scanners, which can detect lesions in the brain or other physical damage. And this can lead to better management and better outcome for many of the patients sustaining these injuries. In our case report we will give several examples of wartime head injuries that occurred in Croatia during the Homeland War in the beginning of the 1990`s. We will give examples of injuries occurring by different mechanisms and their radiological presentation. We will also briefly discuss the most common signs and symptoms of brain injuries and treatment options or management of brain injuries available to us. In conclusion quick and accurate diagnosis of any type of head injury is of the highest importance. And this is even more important when we are talking about head injuries sustained during wartime. Because treatment of these individual and injuries must use a multidisciplinary approach in order to get the best possible outcome for the patients.
