BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN DOGS TREATED WITH SUBCONJUNCTIVAL APPLICATION OF LIMBAL STEM CELLS ALLO-GRAFTS

The fundamental goal in veterinary ophtalmology is application of in vitro grown stem cells/tissues as auto/allo transplants from animal species of interest for veterinary medicine (dog, cat, horse and pig) as a model for transplantation research in therapy of corneal defects and deficiencies. In this research, we used dogs that were patients of the Surgery, Orthopaedics and Ophtalmology Clinic, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, which were diagnosed extensive, chronic thinning of the central cornea (vertex corneae) generated due to mechanical damage and inflammation of the corneae pannosa complicated. Animals were divided in three experimental group regardless of breed, sex and age, each group comprised 7 dogs. Group A consists of clinically healthy dogs (control), in group B were dogs who had injuries treated by conventional ophtalmological approach in veterinary medicine, and group C in which corneal injury were treated using subconjuctival cell allo graft. Blood plasma samples were taken four times during the experiment from all animals for biochemical analysis. Transplantation of limbal stem cells allo-grafts did not affected physiological biochemical parameters. Results described in this paper are additional stimulation for founding of the Eye bank on Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb. This fact could be of relevance for establishing the regional centre for animal stem cell therapy eligible to keep up with similar centres in the EU and the World.
