Danube Swabians in Slavonia under the burden of collective guilt
The presentation is given about the relation of the regime, at the time of communist totalitarianism, towards the Germans in the Croatian region of Slavonia. After the establishment of communist dictatorship, led by Josip Broz Tito, almost all of the Germans in the area of Slavonia have been expelled from their homes or placed in some of the labor camps, while those for which there were any indications of cooperation with the Ustasha regime or the Nazis, were automatically executed without trial. In practice, they became victims of the collective guilt of the German people for Nazi crimes. It is part of the destiny of the German people in the former Yugoslavia, but also in the other European countries which had communist rule. Finally, the fall of communism and the establishment of democratic order in the Republic of Croatia brought on the standards of the national minorities protection, including German national minority. That resulted with re-established cultural organizations and associations that represent the German minority, and increased interest in their fate after the Second World War. Such a relationship can be explained through the application of the national minority rights, but also through the fact that the new Croatian state needed the political support of Germany, as relevant international factor and potential ally.
