Equine recurrent uveitis in lipizzan horses in Croatia

Purpose of the work. Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU), also known as periodic ophthalmia or mo- on blindness is the most common cause of vision loss in horses. Economic losses associated with ERU are significant. ERU clinically manifests as a recurrent acute inflammation of the middle eye layer, uvea. It is the recurrent, progressive character of ERU that is responsible for the subse- quent development of cataracts, intaocular adhesions, phthisis bulbi and blindness. Etiology of ERU is not unique, rather a complex of diseases of common symptomatology creating an ERU syndrome. Cause of the primary disease, environmental factors and genetic makeup of the horse all play a role in the development of ERU. The aim of this research was to determine the preva- lence of ERU in lipizzian horses in Croatia. Since the European Warmblood breeds are conside- red genetically predisposed to ERU, the aimed group was the lippizian breed, as the numerous Warmblood breed in Croatia. Materials and used methods. Ophthalmologic examination was done on 129 horses of lipizzian bre- ed, in 20 diffenent stables. Horses includeed in the study represented 12.2% of the lipizzian breed population in Croatia. The age of the examined horses ranged from 1 to 26 years. A thorough hi- story was obtained from the horse owners, including the information on husbandry, diet, vaccina- tion, profilactic treatments, previous diseases, behaviour, changes in the eyes and vision. The dia- gnosis of ERU was made based on the findings of the typical clinical signs of uveitis and the histo- ry of recurrent uveitis episodes. Outcomes. ERU was diagnosed in two stallions and one mare (2.32% of horses). A persistent re- current character of the disease was determined in all 3 horses in spite of the acute phase inflam- mation therapy. The initial cause of ERU in two horses was trauma and the cause in the third hor- se stayed undetermined. Acute phase ERU was diagnosed in one horse, showing pain, photophobia, blepharospasm, lacrimation, aqueous flare, miosis, corneal edema, anterior synechiae and partial vision loss. A different ocular pathology was determined in 18 other horses ; aqueous flare was found in 4 horses, scleral injection in 6 horses, acute conjunctivitis in 7 horses and one horse pre- sented with a corneal ulceration. Conclusions. Although in the past ERU was the most commonly mentioned ophthalmic disease of veterinary medicine in Croatia, today it is rarely described and its significance is completely mar- ginalized. The accepted presumption of this research was that it is the consequence of the nonsy- stemic ophthalmology pratice in equine veterinary medicine in Croatia, rather then the objective condition. With the incidence of 2.32%, lipizzian horses in Croatia do not belong to a higher risk group of the European Warmblood breeds. However, some of the examined horses also had sings of uveitis but these horses were not diagnosed ERU, since no evidence of recurrence of the disease was determined.
