Late Roman Period on the Island of Vis and its Archipelago : the Archaeological Evidence

Survey of the earlier and recent finds on the island of Vis and its archipelago (Biševo, Svetac, Palagruža). These islands make the easiest and safest crossing from one coast of Adriatic to the other. Island of Palagruža has a quantity of sherds of Late Roman amphorae and fine ware. There is St. Michael church dating back to the 5^th or the 6^th centuries A.D., along with cistern, mosaic tesserae, suspensurae and diverse small finds (glass, coins). Island of Svetac has well preserved fortifications of Justinianic period. In the western harbour of the island of Biševo a large scatter of both Early and Late Roman pottery was found. The island of Vis has several Late Roman sites. Small finds attest continuity of life during the Late Roman Period in the town Issa itself. Late Roman pottery was recorded on only 26 out of 100 known ancient farm sites. An Early Christian church can probably be identified in Komiža. Systematic survey has shown a great diversity of settlements between islands of Hvar and Vis during the Late Roman Period. The author supposes that decline of Vis as compared to Hvar was due to dislocation of sea-routes.
