ON THE FEASIBILITY OF THE POWER SPLIT TYPE TRANSMISSIONS HAVING INDEPENDENTLY CONTROLLABLE OUTPUT SPEED
A power-split-type transmission system with an independently controllable output speed was recently developed. The system is capable of converting a variable or constant input shaft speed into a controllable output shaft speed that is independent of the input speed. The innovative transmission system, which consists of two planetary gear trains with three rotating shafts connected in parallel using two ordinary gear drives, has aroused great public interest among professionals. This paper posits that the proposed transmission would only be viable if four external shafts are used ; i.e. the input power should be distributed to three output shafts, namely, the shaft with a controllable speed that is independent of the input speed ; the control generator shaft ; and the ‘free’ shaft with a variable speed, the power of which is difficult to manage.
