The fate of indigenous goat population in Croatia

Croatian indigenous goat breeds are almost exclusively raised according to traditional extensive outdoor production system. Despite their low productivity, they are invaluable for rural communities in karst regions of Adriatic hinterland where goat farming is a centuries-old tradition. Following Croatia’s recent accession to the European Union, small-scale farmers are attempting to cope with challenges posed by transformative changes in the sociocultural milieu, policies and markets. In order to ensure their continued existence, there is an urgent need to protect and ensure sustainable use of indigenous breeds and traditional knowledge. Market development and farm management should address economic, social and environmental sustainability and result should be quality product at a competitive price. Regarding that, we analysed the prevailing situation including the following aspects: flock and farming structure and size, management practices, production system and environmental and social aspects. We discussed competitive opportunities and the main challenges. Our study identified information gaps and technical limitations relating to the following areas: record keeping, feeding, housing, breeding, and animal welfare and healthcare. Our assessment is that farmers need more guidance regarding EU regulations, certification and labeling options. The key conclusion of our study is that farmers have potential to improve goat production and become self-sustaining using locally adapted resources and conditions. However, information gaps, infrastructure limitations and the lack of a market for goats and their products are the most limiting factor. We particularly emphasise the need for state support to create favorable conditions, regulatory frameworks, and establish an efficient goat market infrastructure.
