Relationships between seminal fluid lead and characteristic indicators of lead exposure in men.
Seminal fluid lead (PbF), blood lead (PbB), activity of erythrocyte delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD), and erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EP) ere measured in 121 adult male subjects: 86 lead workers with long-term slight to moderate occupational lead exposure and 35 control subjects with no occupational lead exposure. The results indicated an exponential, rather than linear, increase of PbF with respect to PbB (r=0.601, P=0.000), which is in accordance with the observed exponential decrease in the percentage of progressively motile sperms with respect to PbB (r=-0.210, P<0.01) and a linear decrease with respect to PbF (r=-0.172, P<0.05) in the same subjects. Highly significant correlations were also found between an increase of PbF with respect to a decrease of ALAD (r=-0.537, P=0.000) and an increase of EP (r=0.505, P=0.000), and considerably better correlations were observed between a decrease in the percentage of progressively motile sperms with respect to ALAD (r=0.305, P=0.000) and EP (r=-0.276, P<0.001) than those with respect to PbB or PbF. The results suggest that PbB may be an insufficiently sensitive indicator of accumulated lead in various target organs, i.e. at the site(s) of lead effect in the organism.
