Nutrient analyses in natural waters: A critical revision.
The authors suggest some improvements, concerning both sample storage and analytical steeps, in the methods for analysis of nutrients in natural waters recommended by Strickland and Parsons. The chemical oxidation of water samples for total phosphorus determination needs to be performed in high quality silica glassware to avoid interferences by silicic acid. Sample treatment by ultraviolet irradiation gives more reproducible results than chemical oxidation. Phosphate, silicic acid and nitrite, even at concentrations higher than those usually found in natural waters do not interfere in the analysis of nitrate, provided the Cd/Cu columns are properly dimensioned (0.8 cm i.d.). Finally a procedure is presented for ammonia analyses with the indophenol-blue method, that significantly increases the precision of the results.
