Narrative, Style and Ideology in Croatian Children's Fiction Film from the Yugoslav Period

The main focus of this paper is an analysis of various narrative, stylistic, ideological and cultural aspects of Croatian children’s fiction films from the Yugoslav period (1945 to 1991). The films of this historical period chosen for analysis are exclusively those produced for children, appropriate for their understanding horizon, with children as main protagonists of the story which the film is attempting to represent. Also, they are either medium-length (approximately 30-45 minutes long) or feature- length (more than 60 minutes long) narrative and fictional ; animated, educational or documentary films are not included in the analysis. The production of these children’s films was realized in three production companies located in Zagreb. One was Zora film (1946-1964), the company specialized for production and distribution of educational films on 16mm film but with the production of medium-length narrative and fiction films in the period from 1958 to 1961 (10 films in total including highly modernist and not exclusively children’s film Carevo novo ruho by Ante Babaja). The main directors of films produced by this company were Ivan Hetrich, Nikola Tanhofer, Branko Majer, Srećko Weygand and Fedor Škubonja. The second company was Croatia film which started producing and not only importing and distributing films from 1969 and made only three children’s films (Družba Pere Kvržice in 1970, Vlak u snijegu in 1976 and Tajna starog tavana in 1984) directed by Vladimir Tadej and Mate Relja. Croatian film Tko pjeva zlo ne misli (1970) by Krešo Golik was also produced by this company but it can be considered marginally appropriate for children. Historically important children’s films from the 1950s were also produced by Croatian major film company Jadran film, namely by distinguished director Branko Bauer (Sinji galeb and Milioni na otoku) and in the 1970s Obrad Gluščević was Jadran film’s specialist for children’s films (Vuk samotnjak and Kapetan Mikula mali). One of the directors that also made children’s films was Dušan Vukotić, who started as one of the most important authors of the world famous Zagreb School of Animated Film.
