Epidemiology and comorbidity of dementia-hospital based study
In our respective study we have analyzed patients diagnosed as dementia, cognitive deficit and patients who, apart from dementia, suffered from other primary and secondary diseases. The data we collected from medical records and case histories within the period from January 1st 2005 to January 31st 2006. i.e. within one year. According to the anamnestic data, neurological and clinical examination findings and neurological- radiological diagnostic, as well as definitions of criteria for different types of dementias, we grouped the patients suffering from following dementias as compared the groups according to the number of patients in each of them: Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), vascular dementias (VD) and other dementias as consequences of some other neurological and non-neurological disease (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, brain tumor, alcoholism). Out of 1842 patients suffering from different neurological diseases, who were hospitalized in the examined period, there were altogether 139 patients suffering from all types of dementia (7, 5%). Out of those 139 patients, according to diagnostic criteria the following percentage of different types of dementias has been displayed: 84 vascular dementias (60%), 26 Alzheimer's disease (19%), 10 MCI (7%), and 19 other dementia syndromes (14%). We also compared vascular risk factors with two most common dementia, vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, in order to see connection between these two diseases. There was a high incidence of hypertension in both dementias, and some low but important number of stroke (38%) was found in Alzheimer's disease. 85% alchemic stroke and 12% cerebral homorrhage was found in patients with vascular demeetia.
