Virtual 3D Calibration Object for the Purpose of 3D Reconstruction
In practice, the choice of a suitable calibration device depends mainly on the required precision of the calibration and on available resources. A traditional approach using regular (solid state) 3D calibration cage does give very well, if not the best, results. However it also involves fine manufacturing and some other practical problems. 3D calibration cage can be simulated by a multiple views of 2D calibration plane (virtual 3D object), whether the plane can be moved freely or the movement is constrained. Since the latter approach demands special equipment it follows that the most optimal approach is to simulate 3D calibration device by unconstrained movements of calibration plane. This paper exploits possibilities of such a simulation and compares results with the use of regular solid-state 3D calibration cage.
