On the impact of intensive agriculture on important aquifers in northern Croatia
The Northern region comprises 30, 800 km2 or 54 % of the Republic of Croatia. Even greater is the share of population, industry, big towns, traffic routes and especially agriculture. Two-third of that area are plains along the Drava and Sava rivers where variously thick and structured aquitard cover very permeable and abundantly used alluvial aquifers. A multidisciplinary researching team cuold not solve a needed significant and rapid expansion of arable areas becouse of stricking hydrogeochemical "time bombs" which intensive agriculture may cause.
