Issues of Translating English Kinesiological Terms into Croatian
An experimental univariate and multivariate analysis of variance with a repeated measures (ANOVA/MANOVA-Repeated Measures) design of two samples of physical education students (male, n = 51 and female, n = 43, totalling 94) from the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb was used in this research. The two measurements, which implied the same 40-item test, were conducted at the beginning and at the end of the eight-month interval during which the students attended the course in English for Special Purposes in the total amount of 60 classes. The goal of this research was to examine the progress made by the students in translating the technical kinesiological terms from the English into the Croatian language, and to see whether any gender differences existed in test results. After eliminating one item because of its lack of variability, the remaining 39 items were analysed. Consequently, five latent dimensions were extracted that explained 35% of the total variance. The Repeated-Measures MANOVA was employed for the purpose of realizing the research goals. The computations showed a significant improvement between the two measurements, and they also showed a significant interaction of gender and measurement. Additionally, it was found that there existed no significant differences between the genders as regards their knowledge of English kinesiological terms.
