Youth readiness for participation in civic activities in Croatia: Dynamic and determinants

The paper presents the dynamic and change of civic participation forms in period of nine years (2004-2013) among youth in Croatia and it aims at examination of level and structure of readiness for participation in civic activities as well as its determinants. Firstly, the intention is to find out how institutional trust affects the readiness for civic participation – is there a positive relationship or institutional distrust increases the need for young people’s civic participation? Also, the aim is to detect other significant determinants so the paper answers the question of the extent in which external (dimensions of institutional trust and institutional support for youth participation) and internal factors (political efficacy and sociocultural characteristics) determine dimensions of readiness for civic participation among contemporary young generation raised in post-socialist society generally deficient in democratic political culture. According to previous foreign and domestic general and youth population studies it is expected that the readiness for civic activities has increased in the examined period (2004-2013) and that the external and internal factor are both significant predictors of civic participation levels. The paper relies on empirical research conducted in 2004 and 2013 in Croatia on representative samples of youth aged 15-29 (N1=2000 ; N2=2000).
