Simulation of Wave Loading on Static Offshore Structures
This paper presents numerical simulation of wave loads on static offshore structures. The Naval Hydro Pack in OpenFOAM is used. Two phase free surface flow model is used with Volume of Fluid (VOF) [2] and Level Set (LS) method [1] for interface capturing. Govern- ing equations are discretized using the Finite Volume Method. Pressure-velocity coupling is obtained by PIMPLE algorithm, a combination of SIMPLE and PISO algorithm. The method is validated with three test cases. In first simulation truncated vertical cylinder immersed in water is exposed to incoming waves. Forces on cylindrical column are calculated. Data is compared with experimental results from [3]. In the second test case a simulation of 3D dam break impacting on a square cross section column is conducted and results are compared to experimental data. The third test case describes freak wave initialization and simulation. Finally it is concluded that CFD simulations for given cases give acceptably accurate results.
